This is a reproduction print of a historical painting by the renowned Polish artist Jan Matejko, depicting the Battle of Grunwald of 1410, one of the most important military victories in Polish and Lithuanian history.
Painted in 1878, The Battle of Grunwald is one of the most famous works of Polish historical painting. The monumental original measures an extraordinary 426 × 987 cm and is part of the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw.
Matejko depicts the dramatic final phase of the battle fought on 15 July 1410, when the allied Polish-Lithuanian-Ruthenian forces defeated the Teutonic Order. At the center of the composition is Grand Duke Vytautas (Witold), while Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen is shown in his final struggle. King Władysław Jagiełło can be seen in the upper-right portion of the composition.
The painting is filled with historical figures, dramatic battle scenes, armor, banners and carefully researched details. Matejko drew inspiration from historical chronicles, particularly the writings of Jan Długosz, while also using artistic interpretation to create a powerful monumental vision of the battle.
Beyond its depiction of a medieval battle, the painting became an important symbol of Polish historical memory and national identity. Matejko created it during the period of the partitions of Poland, when historical paintings served as a powerful way of recalling Poland's political and military achievements.
