Artist: François Gérard (Baron Gérard)
Year: 1810
This is a reproduction print of the monumental historical painting “The Battle of Austerlitz” (La Bataille d'Austerlitz), created by French Neoclassical painter François Gérard in 1810. The artwork commemorates Napoleon Bonaparte's decisive victory at the Battle of Austerlitz on December 2, 1805, one of the most celebrated military achievements of the First French Empire. Also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors, the confrontation saw Napoleon's Grande Armée defeat the combined forces of the Austrian and Russian empires. The original painting is preserved at the Palace of Versailles in France.
The battle took place near Austerlitz, now Slavkov u Brna in the Czech Republic, during the War of the Third Coalition. Napoleon faced an allied army associated with Emperor Francis II of Austria and Tsar Alexander I of Russia. By deliberately weakening his right flank and encouraging the Allies to attack it, Napoleon created an opportunity to strike their center on the strategically important Pratzen Heights. The French assault divided the opposing army and contributed to a crushing victory. The defeat forced Austria to seek peace, leading to the Treaty of Pressburg in December 1805, and strengthened Napoleon's dominance over continental Europe.
Rather than depicting the height of the fighting, Gérard portrays Napoleon on horseback in the aftermath of the victory, surrounded by officers, cavalrymen and soldiers of the Grande Armée. The composition includes a moving encounter with General Jean Rapp, who presents captured enemy standards and prisoners to the emperor. Napoleon occupies a commanding position, while the surrounding figures convey the excitement, exhaustion and triumph of the French army. Through dramatic lighting, meticulously rendered military uniforms, expressive horses and a carefully structured composition, Gérard combines historical narrative with the grandeur of Napoleonic imperial imagery.
Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 510 × 958 cm, making it one of the most imposing representations of Napoleonic military history. François Gérard was among the leading painters of the French Empire, renowned for his portraits of Napoleon and prominent figures of the imperial court. His interpretation of Austerlitz reflects the role of official historical painting in celebrating the military victories and political authority of Napoleon I. Today, “The Battle of Austerlitz” remains an iconic artistic representation of the Napoleonic Wars, the Grande Armée and the decisive battle that established Napoleon's military supremacy in Europe.
