Artist: Nicolas Poussin
Year: 1627

This is a reproduction print of the celebrated historical painting “The Death of Germanicus” (La Mort de Germanicus), created by French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin in 1627. One of the most influential examples of 17th-century European history painting, the artwork depicts the final moments of Germanicus Julius Caesar, a prominent Roman general and member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, who died in Antioch in AD 19. The scene combines classical history with a powerful exploration of loyalty, grief and political intrigue during the early Roman Empire. The original painting is housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minnesota, United States.

The composition portrays Germanicus lying on his deathbed, surrounded by grieving soldiers, loyal companions and members of his household. As the dying general raises his arm, his followers gather around him, expressing sorrow, anger and determination. According to the Roman historian Tacitus, Germanicus suspected that his death had been brought about by poisoning, allegedly connected to Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso, the Roman governor of Syria, whose relationship with Germanicus had been marked by political hostility. Although the circumstances of his death remain historically disputed, Germanicus's passing caused widespread mourning throughout the Roman Empire.

Poussin's painting is particularly remarkable for its carefully balanced composition, expressive gestures, classical architecture and disciplined arrangement of figures. The artist uses the positions and movements of the characters to communicate a range of emotions, from quiet grief to solemn determination. Germanicus occupies the center of the scene, while the surrounding soldiers and mourners form a dramatic yet harmonious arrangement inspired by ancient Roman relief sculpture and the ideals of classical antiquity. The restrained colors and theatrical lighting reinforce the dignity and tragic significance of the moment.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 148 × 198 cm. Commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Barberini, the painting became one of Poussin's earliest major achievements in Rome and helped establish his reputation as a leading painter of classical historical subjects. Its emphasis on moral virtue, sacrifice and emotional restraint influenced the later development of French classical painting and European Neoclassicism. Today, “The Death of Germanicus” remains a masterpiece of Baroque history painting and one of the most compelling artistic interpretations of ancient Roman political history.
