Artist: Jan Willem Pieneman
Year: 1824

This is a reproduction print of the monumental historical painting “The Battle of Waterloo” (De Slag bij Waterloo), created by Dutch artist Jan Willem Pieneman in 1824. One of the most important European military paintings of the 19th century, the artwork commemorates the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, when the allied armies commanded by the Duke of Wellington and Prussian Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher defeated Napoleon Bonaparte, bringing an end to his rule and the Napoleonic Wars. The original painting is housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The vast composition depicts the Duke of Wellington on horseback, surrounded by his officers and allied commanders, during the decisive battle near Waterloo in present-day Belgium. Among the most dramatic moments is the arrival of a messenger carrying news about the advance of the Prussian forces. The painting also includes the wounded Prince of Orange, William II of the Netherlands, who fought alongside Wellington's army and became a prominent symbol of Dutch participation in the victory.

Pieneman's masterpiece is particularly remarkable for its extraordinary scale, detailed military uniforms, numerous historical portraits and panoramic battlefield setting. The artist carefully portrayed many of the commanders and officers involved in the campaign, combining individual likenesses with a sweeping military narrative. Horses, weapons, banners and soldiers fill the scene, capturing the atmosphere of European coalition warfare during the final defeat of Napoleon.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 567 × 823 cm, making it one of the largest paintings in the Rijksmuseum's collection. Completed in 1824, the work celebrates the allied victory and the important role played by the Netherlands in the campaign. Its monumental composition, historical detail and depiction of one of the most famous battles in European history make it an exceptional example of 19th-century military and historical art.
